Opening Reception Yvette Cummings (un)recalled
September 3, 2015 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Yvette’s work explores how childhood trauma presents itself physically and mentally in adulthood.
Yvette Cummings lives in Conway, South Carolina where she devotes her time to her studio work and community development. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the nation. Cummings’ work can be found in both public and private collections. Most recently she was awarded Best of Show at the Inaugural Black Creek Arts Fine Arts Juried Exhibition and Honorable Mention at the Pee-Dee Regional Art Competition. Cummings was also selected to participate in the upcoming 701 CCA South Carolina Biennial 2015.
Cummings’ current body of work features painted narratives created with a purposefully vague and discordant imagery meant to represent the effects time and distance have on memories of childhood. Disjointed imagery, contrasting patterns, and spatial compression represent a snapshots moments in time. The paintings are echo’s of a recreation making visible the slippery history of recalled events that shift and change with each recollection.
(un)recalled will be on display from September 3 to September 25 with an opening reception Thursday September 3rd from 5:30-7 p.m. in the gallery.
